The world's largest proverb archive has finally found a new home at the University of Burlington, Vermont. This private collection, which Wolfgang Mieder has built up and continually extended for more than half a century, will be publicly accessible as a library and research center in a completely restored building on the university campus, the Billings Library.
Nowhere else one can find such a large number of proverb collections in many languages, some of them dating back to the 16th century, all specialized encyclopedias and reference books, the entire phraseological and paremiological research literature, as well as 10,000 copied scripts, but also drawings, graphics, collectibles and art objects on the subject of proverbs, quotations, aphorisms and sayings. The archive is also of extraordinary value for historical language research and the history of lexicography.
